Viewer Question of the Week:

Q: We just got a puppy(cock-a-poo), he is 9 weeks old. He seems to be biting on everything, like shoes, socks, bottom of pants, shoelaces, basically anything.  He also likes to bite or nip at my kids(they are 7 and 9)more than at me or my wife.  What can I do to stop this from escalating?

A: Your puppy is teething and he is not meaning to hurt you or the kids. Understand that this is a painful period for them, and doing your part will make things go a little smoother. Nyla bones for some dogs are a great item for the puppy to chew on. They are safe and can be a cheaper replacement than an expensive pair of shoes. People must take accountability for their personal items. If the dog is chewing shoes, socks, underwear.. lets maybe close the closet doors or pick these items up off the floor.  Another thing to keep in mind is that your puppy is exploring and playing. Human children are taught not to hit hard when playing. Your puppy need to be taught not to bite hard. An old technique I learned from a veterinarian is to put your finger in the mouth of the puppy and when you feel the teeth touch your finger you say the word "OUCH!!!!!" in a very high pitch. DO NOT pull your finger away or out of the mouth. The puppy will be the one to remove its mouth from your finger. In return you need to let the puupy know that you know when to release. To do this, twist your puppies ear just until your puppy says ouch. As soon as the puppy whines you must let go immediately. This is what happens when puppies play they say ouch and the other lets go. If you have an oppurtunity to see puppies or dogs play and one says ouch the play will stop momentarily and then continue. As far as chewing everything you will need to have up to 3 toys and be interrupting your puppy from chewing everything so offer up a toy or two so your puppy has the correct chew toy.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Brad

New Addition to the Family

Brad, love the show. I have learned so much from watching your show and how to apply it to our puppy. We purchased a Great Pyrenees from a reputable breeder in Ontario. We brought him home at 9 weeks. Training began immediately, took a bit on the housebreaking but we made it! He is a very good listener however he is extremely stubborn, I am told that is the breed. Tell them once but don't keep repeating or they will tune you out. We taught him manners when getting a snack, not to be grabby. He is on the raw meat diet so there is alot of variety in his meals and we do change up the times he eats as you had suggesed. He loves tug of war and frisbee but he is not so good on the walks. I do as you say and walk, he is 33lbs at 4 months old. Is there something else I can be doing to get him to walk, he loves to run on the leash, I jog beside him but this cannot go on forever.... :)

We take him to the local dog park at the SPCA in Hamilton, he is just getting use to other dogs, he gets shy when they smell him. He likes to keep at his own pace and do his own investigating. He is something of a gentle giant in that sense, likes to watch the world walk by but is always on guard.

I see that you are in Hamilton on the 13th of May and unfortunately I will not be able to attend. I will buy your book for guidance and I have signed up for training at PetSmart. So please if there is something else I can be doing to encourage a nice walk instead of me walking and my dog playing tug of war with the leash I would really appreciate it!!!

New Addition to the Family

Great to hear you brought your Pyrenees home at the right age. You will have a lot on your hands, as do many puppy owners. I am sorry you could not make it to the Hamilton Seminar, but, we do have a few trainers in Hamilton, who follow Brad's methods. If you e-mail Shantel at shantel@bradpattison.com, she would be happy to put you in contact with one of them.
Cheers
