When we were training Sit stay or Down stay in the beginning we stayed insight, it started at a minute and now "Dino" my dog will stay for up to ten minutes with me out of site! Just keep in mind we want to master this , so dont expect your dog to do this rite away! You want keep close so you can react quick if they do break! We started at 6 feet away , then 20 foot leash and then we would leave their site! It takes time, but now I could go in a store or something and I no he will sit and wait! Well worth the training!

This is something that I really want to teach my dog. Every time i leave him to go in a store, he freaks out, barks, and pulls at his leash towards the dog. I am hesitate to leave him outside, because of his reaction. I want to start teaching him this at the park and slowing more him up to waiting outside a store. When i teach him "patiences" should i run up and correct him when he starts to pull and bark, or let him keep barking and pulling until he relaxes?

Brad taught us by starting small.....baby steps. We didn't start by tying up the dog and leaving it's sight.
So, when you leave your dog and he wants to pull toward a passing dog, is it to play? Aggression? Sounds like he/she might benefit from some socialization...at the dog park pref off leash.

Re:Patience Posted: 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Opps sorry Vegas...my fault... I found my typo... he pulls towards me... not towards dogs. So I wanted to slowly teach him how to wait outside for me if I\'m running into the corner store to pick up something. I\'ve seen so many dogs wait patiently and I would love for my dog to be able to do so also. So when I tie him up and slowing walk a few feet away from him, should I correct him right away when he wants to run towards me, or should i let him relax himself since he will still see me in front of him? Thanks in advance!

Ok, gotcha.....good.
Will your dog sit stay?
For how long?
From what distance?
Even when you're out of sight?
When we tie him up somewhere we give him the STAY command.
I think Brad has a video on the site for Sit/Stay. It starts with less than an arm's length that you back away. We started there and can now turn our back and walk FAR FAR away....so as you can see this is just like leaving him somewhere like a store, nipping in for a quick minute and coming back.

Hope that helps.

(p.s. have you red Brad's book? How does your dog react when you leave the house?)

Hey Vegas thanks for your response...

Will your dog sit stay? yes
For how long? under 5 mins (he gets anxious)
From what distance? ranges from 5-10ft
Even when you're out of sight? if i'm out of sight he will bark for me (calling me back) He does not bark when he can still see me.

I know that he gets sad when I leave him. In the morning when I go to work he is 100% fine, its when I come home after work and leave again he gives me sad eyes and he might whine at the door slightly. He is VERY happy to see me when I arrive home, he will follow me everywhere, cuddle with me on the sofa and go play with his toys (running around with them, playing fetch with me, shaking the toy in his mouth like a wild kid). (I know he might have slight separation anxiety)

I have not read his book yet, I've been waiting for his hardcover to come out. (been waiting for a while and I hope it comes out soon)

Based on that info, in my opinion, it sounds like you're on the right track.
Sounds like he would like more exercise and stimulation/challenge...so maybe work on the tie up to something after he's tied out from lots of exercise/playing/mental stimulation etc.
I think that they Separation Anxiety issue may be playing a role when you're trying to tie up and go out of sight. Brad's book has great suggestions for dealing with this.
Practice and patience are the keys.
Good luck!
