Puppy shows love with her teeth! Posted: 2 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
Our puppy is almost 4 months old now. She is a toy mix breed and very, very hyper. Our major issue is that she shows her love with her teeth. It seems not matter how hard she tries (she knows very well we don't like the bites) she can't help herself. But, my biggest issue is that whenever I am out walking her or have her somewhere with me, almost everyone who we walk by wants to stop and pet her...she is just so darn cute and happy to see them. And, she shows her love to them with her teeth too. I always warm people that she is super hyper and puppy bites. She just about turns herself inside out with excitement when she meets someone new. I call her a Pirahna because her teeth are constantly going. I'm afraid to take her anywhere. What to do?!

Another issue we have is that she is afraid of other dogs. We come across many on our walks, but she cries and doesn't want to be near them. When another dog barks as we are walking, she gets very concerned. She was socialized with cats, no dogs for most of her young life. My vet told me not to take her out until she had her last vaccine, which was a couple weeks ago. I"m hoping she will grow out of this.

This has been answered before (how to get a dog to stop biting), however I will help you with this one.

Your pup is teething, and those little teeth (read razors) are hurting him/her. The best thing we did with molly is when she would bite, we would yelp "OUCH" loud and high pitched, the dog needs to learn that biting is not right. To cure the teething part, we found a fabric bone that you can soak in water and freeze.. (kind of like freezing a soother for a baby).

Hope this helps!

Scott

ps: This is a great time for you to pick up Brad's EBook, Synergy, which is defiantly worth the price as it covers this and more stuff - like toys, food, grooming, ect.... you can download the free chapters from the link on the main page.

Almost forgot about your 2nd question

Your best bet is to take your dog to the dog park, and let it learn how to properly greet and say hello to another dog. They will always run back to mom, if mom picks them up and coddles them when they are afraid... so dont do it. Let your dog get "What For" from another dog, it will teach them how to play, how to say hello, and how to act proper in the park. Plus it IS the BEST form of socialization, and the cheapest one!

Cheers

Scott

Thanks for your input Scott. I"m new to this site, and it would have taken forever too look through all the old posts. lol

I have been doing everything that you said about the biting thing since the day we got her. Hopefully one of these days it will finally 'click' and she will get it! I guess its all about patience and persistance.

About the other question...I find it funny that she TOTALLY dominates one of our 2 cats (our other cat won't take any crap from her), and the cat is way bigger than she is. But when it comes to other dogs, no matter what their size, she's afraid of them.

I will keep working at it!!!

My eldest dog gives people "love bites" as well he is 7 years old.. He doesnt do it all the time but it is surely unexpected when it happens..he isnt doing it out of aggression.. he uses the little teeth in the front and nibbles... He also shows remorse when it happens as a big ouch comes following but he cant help himself either..So when it does happen he gets a time out and no pats or attention... Most people close to us knows he does this and they also follow our routine... good luck
