Oh yah, you gotta have their legs off the groud for sure. And the higher the collar up on the neck the better cause if it is high it causes the umcomfortableness for the dog quicker. We use the same stringing up technique for Chevy when she is barking at strangers too. (she makes WAY worse sounds than Rico lol) I supposed because my dogs are little, I had to pull their front legs WAY off the ground otherwise it isn't doing anything. They don't have the body weight I guess. With both of them sometimes I had to pull them up so high their back legs were barely touching the ground. Basically I had to keep pulling them up and up and up until they stopped doing what they were doing. And it took lots of patience and telling myself I was doing this to help them to hang them there while they made all sorts of awful noises until THEY made the decision to finally sit down. It is a little tough for sure and I would be mumbling "well sit the heck down dummy so you can breathe again".

well done patti i do the same like you say works well as you cut off the air. did read somewhere that it is one of the best ways to put across that you are alpha as instinct tells them you are powerfull as you can cut off the air supply

I didn't realize this was something calming for a dog, but that explains why Sushi WAS calm.

Giving him corrections is one thing...but showing them what we WANT them to do is a whole other thing. And, that is what I needed, and have been looking to do for some time now, as the corrections just weren't enough.

Today, Sushi and I had a HUGE success at the dog park.

When we got there, right away I started working with him. Everytime a new big dog came into the park, I put Sushi into a sit - he was perfect!!

Only 1 dog got him going. A huge Hound that Sushi has despised from the first day they met. This dog is very vocal and barks non stop. He just wants to play, but Sushi just hates him. I did manage to get Sushi into a sit eventually. Sushi was not physically challenging, but he sure was vocal! He eventually calmed down and sat nicely - yay! The next time that Hound came over, Sushi ignored him.

But, about 20 minutes later, the owner of a beautiful Husky came over to meet Sushi. She wanted to come in to see him, so left her dog in the main area while she did that. I noticed that her dog was quite calm so I asked if she would like to bring her in and she did!

Sushi always greets larger unknown dogs with a snarlyface, but not this time. Once he managed to sniff a hello, he initiated play with her and off they went!

It was a perfect day!

Great stuff to hear everybody doing well and making progress!! Bayley is doing better...today we were out practicing and walking..well sort of walking!! My neighbour has a young Jack Russell and it was outside in the yard and when it spotted us it came running over and of course it's person was trying to call it back, with no success. Bayley was alot more polite and just gave a little growl instead of going into her usual barking and having a hissy fit. She was more polite with the usual dog greeting too and then of course they wanted to play..hehehe, the little dog just looked at her and showed her tummy...ok you're bigger than me...then of course more jumping around and playing. Not easy to do when you've got your dog tied to you!

This is so cool. I think we feed off of each other's energy. I know I wouldn't have had the courage to take Ella off leash yesterday if I didn't know there were others out there feeling the fear and getting on with it anyways. No one on here seems rash or foolishly taking risks with their dogs. The success of others lets me know I can have it too if I keep working at it.
