" NO NOISE!"...it works, it really works!! Posted: 8 Months, 1 Week ago

I've been lurking around this site and LOVE it. I just want to share a quick, amazing story! I am a dog walker. I love my little crew that I walk, all umbilically attached! There's 4 dogs in my group, and they all are fantastic on the leash except for my own boxer....she's great until there's a bird, squirrel or dog barking in their yard, I can usually distract her with a "leave it" for the first two distractions but, the woofing dogs as we walk past really challenges my little beast! Sooooo, although I usually switch up our routes, I have one house that I must pass to leave the neighbourhood and there's a beautiful, humungous mastif that sits on his deck and has to acknowledge our passing by barking incesantly and then running along his fence to see us on our way...( I so wish he could just come along for the walk with us!)...My Roxy can't resist his "cat calls!" and always lunges his way. Today as we walked past " Barky McBarkerson" ... I yelled up to the deck in a firm, commanding voice " NO NOISE " one time and he stopped...AMAZING, I'm thinking his owners must use this command! He didn't run down to greet us at the fence, he just plopped himself down on his deck, looking defeated. I gave him a " Good Boy " as we passed and his head cocked as if to say " Whatever, I'll get ya next time!" Do you guys think I was out of place shouting out a command to a dog that's not mine? All I know is that " NO NOISE " is a stroke of GENIUS!!! .........Have a fabulous week-end everyone!

I'm so jealous! No noise doesn't work on mine, YET, but I'm persistent and will keep practicing until I get it right. I don't think you were out of line in correcting the dog, but there may be others who feel differently. If my neighbour were to walk by and my dogs started barking, I would not be offended at all if he told them "no noise". And if it worked he would have to move in Congratulations!

Several years ago when I walked to school my friend and I used to have these two dogs charge thier fence and bark like crazy, let's just say that the rumor went that the granddam was half wolf, and so they were a 1/4 mum and a 1/8 son. These were nasty dogs that made everyone in our neighborhood afraid of them, and seeing that response they just did it more. The end result were 2 were shot after escaping and roaming (on seperate occasions) and the male was put down after biting. If you can help this mastiff behave better from the other side of the fence using just your voice, go for it! Some barking is acceptable, but excessive is not.

I do the "NO NOISE" to dogs who bark at me all the time, even if their owners are there. If they aren't going to do anything then I will. I would never touch the dog or leash, but a quick "NO NOISE" gets the point across to owner and dog. There is this lab who runs along the fence at our local park who always barks at Beau. She usually goes over to the fence to sniff and say 'hello' (in a nice way, no barking) and this dog just continuously barks and jumps. Not in a mean way, but in a 'I want to play too' kind of way. I have never seen this dog on a walk or outside of the yard (really sad). Anyways, if the dog doesn't stop barking in a few minutes then I say "NO NOISE" or "ENOUGH" really loudly. Sometimes in the summer the owners are on the back deck, but I do it anyways. They always call the dog back over to them, but never correct the behaviour. I sometimes think about printing off some of Brad's techniques and signing my name to it then leaving it attached to the fence. Maybe that would get the point across? lol. Anyways, I think you did the right thing, I mean the dog was barking at you, so you barked back.. right?

When Diego barks I haven't used thr "No Noise" command I have used the word "enough" it seems to work to some degree do you think that I should change to "no Noise?" would it work better or would it confuse him? is it the actual words or is it the tone that is the important thing?? Thanks Susan

I have been using "ENOUGH" for the 'no noise' command for 11 years. I tried switching the command when I first saw Brad's show a year or so ago, and it worked too. I had to say it once or twice more, but she did listen. I think it all has to do with a loud, quick inturuption, I don't think that the actual work means anything.. you could probably use "PICKLE" and it would work the same as long as it was forceful, direct, loud and at the appropriate time... lol.
I have stuck with "ENOUGH" just because that is what we have used all along. It works for us. I want to use "NO NOISE" on my new puppy though, if possible to use both (probably not..lol) mostly because I like the sound of it better.. lol.

Oh my DOG!!!
"PICKLE"...I think I might try that....
I'm still chuckling!!!
Unfortunately, when I took my husband by the mastiff to "show off!!" the NO NOISE technique, it failed, or should I say , I failed, wasn't quite as forceful!!!....but you are right, it's all in the tone....anyhow, I gave that big ol'boy (dog, not husband!) some lovin' through the fence!!! So, now I think we'll just stop and chat with him before we head off on our walk, and if I ever see the owners I'd like to offer to walk the big fella!!!....thanks for all your input!!
