Now that the white stuffs gone, it's time for the black, flies that is.
I know some of you are in areas with blackflies the size of crows,so how do you deal with them?
I just came back from a walk and I officially donated a pound of flesh.

We have flies of some kind! and lots of them! When walking, I have to keep my mouth closed. It makes for a quiet walk! Abby kept rubbing her face. They were really bugging her! They don't bite but they're everywhere! We live in a wooded area so I'm surprised we're not getting the black flies! Yet!

We haven't had too many black flies yet, But the only time I "see" them, is after they've taken a chunk out of me and I'm wiping away the blood !
They are really small at our place though - maybe 3 x the size of a fruit fly, so they can get into your hair without you knowing it!

Something bothers Keymo, when he's in the yard after supper. You can see him jumping and snapping at the air. You'd think he was haluscinating (?spelling?) ! It looks way to funny !

We check his skin over, and no bites. Go figure !

My friend lives on a farm and makes a "natural" bug repellent for her dogs and the horses. I'll see if I can get the recipe from her ... or if I can find something off the internet. She makes a huge batch of it and just stores it in a big jug and fills the spray bottle when needed (frequently!)

No bugs yet here. Although I curse the below 0 temps in the morning, I relish the NO BUG time we are getting until summer officially hits.

Joe, you can go to a health food store and buy a bug repellent from them. The one I have uses lavender, citronella etc. in it. It doesn't keep them away completely, but it does help. It is oil based, but just look at it like fur conditioner! Nice soft coat! Ha Ha! I just spray a little on my hands and wipe their noses and tummies. Aspen gets attacked worse than Willow because of her colour.

Believe me, I know what bad bug season is like. The official bird of Manitoba is the mosquito!!!!!!!

Hi Mary
Good to see you. How\'s the rehab going?
The dog\'s, not yours.
Can your dog swim in the lake yet or are you using some kind of pool set-up?
Hope things are coming along well.
I think you may be one of the most northern posters that visit this site.
About a month from now you\'ll be back digging through this thread looking for recipes, or do you need a shotgun to blast your way through?
All joking aside, I was just out and there are swarms of them, thankfully they aren\'t biting, but they sure are irritating. Poor Duke gets them up his nose and in his mouth and he does look kind of funny trying to swat them.
I went past a Vet\'s office today and they had a sign out for pet friendly insect repellent, but we didn\'t stop.

I know Avon's Skin So Soft keeps mosquitoes away, not sure if it works on black flies. My mom also brews up some potion out of herbs, and it works great too. I'll try to pry her top secret recipe out of her!

Here's a recipe for homemade black fly and mosquito repellant for your dog. Knowing that most of us are cottagers and outdoors lovers, it may come in handy and it contains no chemicals:

Add 1 cup of hot water to 2 sliced lemons and a couple of rosemary sprigs. Soak overnight. Fill a spray bottle and spritz onto dog's coat, avoiding eyes.

I tried Avon's product on Scout and it never worked.

The black flies would get on the inside of her eye lids so when I went to wipe them away and she would blink they would go inside with her eye. It was awful. She would blow up like she had elephantitis for the first week or so, her eyes would swell shut and then she seemed to get an immunity to them... where as I never did.

Did you know you can give a dog Benedryl? Check with your vets for the right dosage, but I did use that for her for itchiness, swelling and if she swallowed/bit wasps and got stung badly over the years. It helped with the first week adjustment to the black flies and then I didn't have to do anything.
