This thread discusses the Content article: Barking Dogs

Hi Brad,
I watch your show all the time. I love it! You give great advice and I like that you are firm with people as well as their dogs. People (like me) who love animals, tend to treat them like babies and lose the upper hand in a matter of no time. My dog D.O.G...(Dioji) no really, that's his name..is just a little over 1 year old and is such a pleasure in my life, except when he barks. He seems to lack confidence. He finally broke the habit of "squirting" any time we would approach to fast (even to pat him) or when someone came over and he would squirt on their leg while they patted him. Now, he barks. Barks anytime there is someone at the door, barks when he hears a faint noise, barks at almost every sound he hears. He sometimes barkt in the middle of the night and wakes us up...(sleeps under my bed). Anyway, I would love to know how to train him to stop it. I don't mind if he would bark once or twice to alert us if someone is at the door but that's it. Sooner or later, I will need to have him "babysat" and I'm afraid of asking anyone in fear that he will drive them bananas! My sister sat for me about 6 months ago and she and her hunsband didn't get any sleep. I also have a problem where he is alone at home during the day while I work and I know that he barks while we are gone...but I can't quit my job or afford to have him "kept" all day. Can you please help?

Keep up the great work and thank you!

Sylvie

Hi Slyvie

Your best bet is to get brads book available on this site and start some of the techniques, brad does not always answer posts its mostly the moderators sometimes the CET's but mostly people like us who have read his book attended his seminars and classes and try to help each other out using brads techniques. The main thing is to make sure ur pooch sees you as alpha, and use the "NO NOISE" in a loud stern voice when he is barking, keep him on umbilical when he is going to approach someone at ur door or outside and give him corrections and the no noise while he is barking!!! If u get brads book and follow his techniques you should be able to help Dioji in no time!! please everyone post what i have missed im still learning too

Hi! all,

I have the exact same problem. My older dog who is 6 always barks and he has taught that to my 11 month old puppy. It's really annoying and frustrating. Which book are you talking about? the e book? I would like a hard copy, does he have one? thanks

Hi everyone,

I've also been blessed with a barking dog. I have 2 dogs, Dallas (3 yrs old) and Timber (2 1/2 yrs old) and ever since we gotten Dallas he's made it his duty to bark for almost any reason. I bought Brad's book and have been following his advise, which has helped alot. But the one situation I can't seem to control has to do with my neighbor.

They have 2 boston terriers that are always loose, they come on our property to relieve themselves and the neighbor loves to get their dogs to chase after a remote control car in front of our house. These neighbors are not very cooperative and so it is very hard for us to control the situation. Even if we prevent Dallas from being able to see outside, the sound of their dogs barking along with the noise of the remote control cars drives him mad!

We recently came home to a living room soaked with drool and a very agitated dog (panting like mad even if the house temperature was cool). I don't want to resort to medication to control this but when I see what it does to Dallas, I feel that we are letting him down and can't bear to watch him get so worked up.

I pray someone has a solution 'cause it's Dallas's sanity that depends on it!!!

Hey everbody,

The 1st thing is to spend a couple of weeks becoming alpha, which means lots of umbilical in the house and outside. No talking for the initial period of establishing alpha, if you don't have a copy of the book then download it, and no, it is not out in hardcover. The next step, interupt the dog before the barking starts, the interuption must be physical and verbal, it must shock the dog. If your dog is barking at the window, then get them away from the window. Barking at the window, empowers the dog and makes them bark more, aggression starts escalating.
As for neighbours who are rude, take control, if they get pissed, that is their problem not yours. As for the dog who releives himself on your property and the owners do nothing, there are laws for that, engage them to make your neighbour understand how serious you are. People, please do not forget, raise the bar of expectation. I expect more from people than they give, if they are not being true neighbours then they will deal with what I have to offer, which may be police officers, local bylaw officers, or court. Also expect more from your dog, show him what to do but do not expect anything less than that.

Hope that helps!

Well I just moved to Cranston and I guess everyone is ok with our neighborhood being a 24/7 barking bregade! The neighborhood is constantly noisy with dogs barking all the time and when one dog starts they all join in! I had to work extra hard to remind my dog that this is not acceptable and it really is about interupting her before she even really begins. I watch her ears and her body language to read when it is that she is about to bark and quickly distract her. The little Yorkie next door sure is insistent upon running up and down the fence and trying to get my dog to join in but I just make sure that when he is outside that I am watching my dog closely and interupt her before she goes to the fence. Teaching her to ignore the barking worked great and it doesn't involve any yelling or harsh disipline. We now have it so that Georgia is not even fazed by other dogs barking because she simply knows that it is not acceptable to bark at other dogs when they are just making unnessasary neighborhood noise.

I would have a friend, neighbour or household member help, just have them come to the door as many times as it takes and correct the barking right away, eventually they will figure it out.
