So Much for the Kennel Cough Vaccine!! Posted: 1 Month, 1 Week ago

Yup, it's been going around the dog park in kingston and when I got home from work tonight I was greeted by a hacking, coughing pooch. She got the vaccine early June...so much for that one!! My Mom said she was very quiet today but ate her breakfast and did her business etc. So she's confined to barracks for a few days...she's going to get a nice warm dinner tonight with chicken broth and some steak..no bones tonight I don't want to irritate her throat. She got a dose of cough syrup and it seems to be calming her cough nicely. I hope she can sleep tonight, cause I know if I hear her coughing I'll have to get up.

Last summer there was a kennel cough going around at the dog park close to my home, of coase off to the vet ,Dino also had been vaccinated but that doesnt mean he wont get it! I was told it was a new strain and that they can still get it but not as bad as if they were not vaccinated! My sister-in-laws dog never got it and he was with us !! Her dog was also a year older so maybe his immune was stronger!

REal pain in the butt especially for the dog, I'm off for 2 days and was looking forward to going to the park and downtown and stuff with her but with this I guess she's stuck at home. I read that a collar can irritate the throat so I don't want to make her any more uncomfortable and then she gets coughing more if she starts running around...so far she's only coughed a few times since the cough syrup so that's a good thing, give her throat a rest. Hopefully she'll be over it soon and we won't need to make a trip to the vet!

Well I figure if the cough isn't clearing up by Saturday, I can probably get her in to see the vet Saturday morning..maybe I'll have her check my ear too, it's still plugged and the doctor's I've been to haven't been much help!!!

Abby got Kennel Cough from the dog park as well and passed it on to Maggie. They both got over it fine. Abby did have greenish discharge from eyes and nose. I gave it a week and it was gone. If it would of gone any longer, I would of brought her to the vet.

Yeah, my pup was vaccinated as well but has had it twice in the last 6 weeks. Caught it from daycare I'm sure, although she did not have a horrible case of it (cleared up within 3-4 days and only bothered her in the morning and at night) but what a pain in the butt! Hubby had to take her to work with him because we can't leave her at home alone for 9-10 hours a day so that was interesting! Kennel cough is a virus though, so it's the same as a cold basically. You cannot vaccinate against it 100%. I hear a lot of vets prescribe antibiotics for kennel cough, which is pretty terrible. I know they can get secondary infections, which might require medication, but to prescribe that right off the bat...it should clear up on its own within several days.

Jazz has been vaccinated but im starting to think shes showing symptoms..
she will occassionally cough, kind of the choking as its described cough and her nose has been a bit runny.. she really seems to cough and sneeze after walks or if she gets excited. its not too bad yet today so i guess all i can do is keep a good eye on her

LOL I think this thread jinxed me! Looks like our girl has kennel cough, AGAIN! That'll be the third time in under 2 months! She just got spayed last Friday, so I wouldn't be surprised if she picked it up at the vet's. Last 2 times she caught it at daycare I'm sure, but I called them this morning and their last outbreak ended a while ago, which leads me to believe it's from the vet's this time. Doesn't surprise me a whole lot cause I guess that as they're healing, their system is more vulnerable to infections, etc. I don't know about the rest of you, but my dog only has issues in the morning right when she gets up (will hack and wheeze for a while and then it settles down) and after some physical activity. Her leash seems to irritate her throat on walks too. Oh well. So a few more days to spend with dad in his work truck and hopefully she'll shake it by the end of the weekend so she can go back to daycare. C'est la vie!
