Crate training Posted: 1 Month, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
OK, I finally gave in and got a crate. I only use it if I need to leave the house for and Pistache is left alone. At 10 weeks,I don't think it's responsible to leave him run free alone.

We leave it open all the time, we only close the door if we leave the house. He has no problem going in, and playing in it, but he sounds ,like a dog getting a beating as soon as we close the door.

Anyway, I have a question, how long until he stops yelpping/barking/crying? It's heartbreaking and we can hear it from the outside of the house...when the windows are clsoed.

He doesn't sleep in it since he sleeps at the end of our bed (not on it, he has his own bed in front of ours) .

Dont give in... I have 5 5 week old pups that hate it as well..and cry and cry... but they dont get out until they are quiet and calm.. its the only thing I get ahead of before they leave... he will get used to it..he doesnt have a choice.. he isnt hurt, or suffering.. try feeding him in it and close the door as he is eating and try through out the day while you are home.. that way he doesnt know if you are leaving or at home when he is in it and doesnt stress hm out.. good luck..

It might help to start closing him inside while you guys are home. Start with short time frames and work up from there, give him toys to play with inside. He doesn't get out when he is whining, that only says to him "hey, if I whine they will let me out! I'll do it more"

Feeding in the crate should really help too.

Hi there,

Don't give up - you're doing the right thing by introducing the crate to him. My dog took 1 week to get used to the crate when he was 12 weeks old (this included one entire night of whining) but don't give in. He's 7 months old now and all I can say is that your dogs puppy behaviour will get worse before it gets better so putting it in the crate is good for his safety. Our dog loves the crate now and will go in there if we're using the vaccuum, or if there's a thunderstorm - it becomes their safe place. Also, we found it really sped up house training and is great if you go away to somewhere with your dog overnight, they still have their own place.

Good luck!
