How many times a day for puppy Posted: 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi
Am I having a problem with getting my 5 Month old puppy (golden retriever) to eat more than once aday.
I was feeding her morning and evening and than she decided, that she was not interested in eating her breakfast
so I have started to double up on her even meal which she does eat mostly.
I was thinking it might have to do with her teething., but all her big teeth are almost in now.
I have heard from other people that puppie's should eat two to three times a day. Should I be worried?

DJ

When we got our dog, all the sources of information said, feed 3 times a day as a puppy, then you can go to twice a day when they get a bit older. For us, eliminating that middle meal was easy, as our dog just stopped eating it. Now, we still feed him twice a day, and sometimes he eats a lot, sometimes he doesn't. If your dog isn't eating one meal, I don't think it's a big deal, as long as they are still eating and have the same level of appetite. If your dog seems to have lower energy, and doesn't want to eat, then there could be something medical going on. That being said, if your dog only wants to eat once a day, you can talk to you vet and see if there is any cause for concern, but I wouldn't worry too much. A lot of dogs eat meals once a day, and thrive on it, some as adults still eat three meals a day. Every dog's eating style is different. So with all things, if something happens to your dog that you're worried about, always talk to your vet about it, but if she still has the same level of energy, just isn't interested in the extra meal, then I'm sure she's fine. You can always continue to offer the extra meal and see how she responds.

I feed Quendi four times a day (8:00, 12:00, 4:00 and 8:00) but just not a lot. She would get the same amount if she were fed twice or three times a day, I just spread it out. Maybe you should try that, good luck

I prefer to feed pups multiple meals as they are only going to use what they need at that time so if they only get one meal a day, they are only getting nutrients once a day and crapping out the rest. I\'d be worried my pup wasn\'t getting enough chances to absorb the needed nutrients to grow and thrive with only one meal a day. What I do with my pups if they seem like they are skipping a meal, or leaving some left overs, is to slightly lower the amount of each feeding until it is an amount that they are willing to eat, and that is keeping them at a good wieght. Just the other day actually, Scarling skipped one of her meals so the next meal, I started giving her a cup of food for each meal {three times a day} instead of a cup and a quarter and now she\'s eating it all.
