Poop Question! (But not RAW related) Posted: 1 Month, 1 Week ago Karma: 2
Since I know all the Raw feeders look in this section of the forums, I thought this would be the most appropriate place to put this!

On Sunday night, Bobbie started to have the runs (his poop looks like smooth peanut butter but diarrhea version - aka yuck). It hasn't really stopped since (now it's Wednesday morning) and I want to know how to help him regain his solid poops. Also, I'd like to be able to sleep through the night again without being woken up 4 times (lol).

On Sept 25th I switch Bobbie from Science Diet (I think) to Orijen. The switch was done gradually and his bowels were fine since he started eating Orijen 100% on the 25th. Thennn last Thursday (the 2nd) there was a little misunderstanding with the lady who lives upstairs (she was watching him when I left him outside to go to a meeting, and I had the understanding that she'd put him on his lead once she wanted to go inside. apparently I was wrong!) so he ended up going through a bag of garbage that was outside. He got into old yogurt, chewed on meat trays, ate a banana and other gross things. So I assumed that the runny poops were the cause of eating the garbage... except now they won't stop!

I know on the forums (and other places online) people have discussed a boiled chicken and rice diet for a few days. Should I try this? When would I start this and how long would I leave it on? Should I just go to the vet instead?

Any help would be great

I think I would take him to the vet. If this has been going on for 5 days then he could possibly be de-hydrated and need liquids and a poop sample probably needs to be tested to make sure he hasn't picked up something that he'll need meds to correct. I think dogs systems correct themselves quite quickly if they are going to.

Good luck!

It's been a little over 48 hours. Luckily he's still drinking lots, but I'll probably end up taking him to the vet tomorrow if I can get an appointment! IF not I'll have to go to my old family vet in BC as I'm leaving Friday morning with Bobbie :/

Try canned pumpkin. NOT pie filling.
They should be right beside one another in the grocery store.
Give him a nice rounded tablespoon with each meal.
That should help, if not, after another 1-2 days go see the vet.

Definitely make sure your dog is not dehydrated.... This happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I spent $200 at the vet as my puppy was dehydrated from having diarrhea.

Since I have learned a few pointers from the vet I'll share them with you.... The best way to check if your dog's dehydrated is the skin test. Grab the skin on your own arm and pinch it, notice how it retracts back into place almost immediately. Now do the same thing to the skin on your dog's neck or back... if it doesn't retract back (not very elastic) your dog may be dehydrated. Another way to tell is to touch your dogs gums. If they feel sticky and dry this could be another sign of dehydration. Regardless if your dog has diarrhea and it's not getting better your dog needs fluids. My vet told me to mix (at the most) a 50/50 mix of pedialite (electrolyte solution for babies) or gatorade with water and make sure my dog drinks it.

To properly rehydrate my dog the vet had to inject saline solution just underneath her skin. After this and feeding her electrolytes her poop began to harden up after a couple of days.

Good luck!

I've given Jessie both plain pumpkin or plain boiled rice, and both have worked to firm her up.

I've had a lot of diarrhea over the past couple of years (nice thought, eh?), and here's what I found that works. Stop feeding for 24 hours, and the next meal I give them cooked hamburger with rice. Chicken would work as well. This has worked every time, but had it not, I definitely would take them to the vet. But that is advice that the vet gave me!

I do something similar as well. Fast them for 24 hours, and make a big pot of boiled rice. What I usually do though is the first meal it's plain rice, second meal add a bit of kibble to the rice and slowly work them off the rice and back on the kibble by adding a bit more each meal. I swear by slippery elm bark. That stuff even works on the kids! lol I usually mix a dose in with the meal.
