I wing it! Like Nat had said if she seems to loose weight I'll give her more but she hasn't and is the perfect size right now. I give her abit more if she's been active. I don't think you'll under feed your dog. I figure in the wild, their not fed consistantly anyway.

Today she had 2 good size pork hocks. I may or may not feed her abit of liver later today...She never looks like she's starving.

Good luck!

Pretty much. Keymo looks about what-70 lbs? If so about 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. a day. You could weigh it all out but I don\'t think many people do.
I gave Duke 3 good size chicken thighs this morning and watched him through the window. He buried the first two then ate 1. A couple of minutes later he dug up 1 he had just buried. Duke pretty much paces what he eats. Before Brad he had his kibble available all the time. Then I started taking it off him after about 15 minutes. Now he gets fed raw and hides some of it. Doesn\'t bother me, in fact it\'s kind of neat how he watches to make sure noone is looking, digs a hole then fills it in by pushing with his nose.

Keymo,

that's just a guideline to get you started, but it's up to you to monitor your dog's weight. If my dog is very active and it's a dog park day, I'll feed her a little more meat/fat. If it's a lazy day and it's just a 45 minute/hour long walk then I feed a regular portion or either 2 pork hawks, 2 chicken leg quarters or a hunk of beef. During the winter I noticed she was looking a bit skinny, so I fed her more fatty meals too. She's porked up a bit so I figure with this spring weather and all the melting snow I'll be able to take her running more and she'll lost the little bit of fat she has (which really isn't fat...she's a pretty lean dog!)

When I got my dog, she came with a bag of puppy science die... ugh. I chucked it in the garbage and went out meat shopping. Started with a chicken. She licked it at first, wasn't quite sure what to do. She left then came back to it and ate half of it. I took up the other half and put it in the fridge.
She was an 8 month old pup when I got her, so I wasn't worried about letting her tummy get used to raw. I fed her chicken for the first 2 days, then pork and lamb all within the first week. She had some wet pooh, but it wasn't too big of a deal.
I also noticed how amazing her coat looked! When we got her she was rough like straw and had big red hot spots on her tummy. Within a few days of being on raw the red spots were going away and she started blowing her coat (it was fall) and her fur was the softest I've ever felt. It was like silk!

Dukesdad - Keymo is 65lbs. How big is Duke?

Nathlie - the 2 porc hocks , or 2 chicken quarters - is that per meal or per day? How much does Poe weigh?

I'm not really that concerned about the whole idea of how to watch what they eat / how they're doing. I just want to START out the first week not starving or overfeeding Keymo !

Oh - and chicken quarters on on sale starting Friday April 11th at 0.99/lb ! I'll try to stock uo on whatever my little freezer section will hold !
I'll be looking to buy a small chest freezer - for Keymo's new food.

Hi!

Abby is 65pds and for example, I\"ll give her 2 chicken leg quarters or 2 pork hocks in one day. With that she\'s not loosing weight, that\'s for sure.

Sometimes I\'ll give them at once or in seperate meals.

So - Abby would have gotten 1 chicken leg quarter for breakfast this morning? Then she'd get 1 for dinner tonight?

That sounds easy.
Stupid question - just how big is a pork hock? It's not something I would buy for myself, and I'm going to go to a couple of butchers this weekend to "test" them out.

Keymo's first raw meal will be Saturday breakfast !

I think pork hocks are about a pound each. I find at the IGA they are half the price as No-Frills.
Thanks for telling me about the quarters. I prefer them over the thighs and drumsticks because they are a bit bigger, though Duke does fine with anything I give him so far.
We took Duke to the vet to get snipped on his 6 month birthday and he weighed 76 lbs.I figure he's somewhere around a hundred now.
I'm sure you'll do fine with the raw, and there are lots of people here to help, though I'm sure you won't need it. It's so simple. One of my favorite links is the recipes. http://rawfeddogs.net/Recipe

I forgot - the chicken quarters sale is at Loeb. It's usually the same at an A & P, since they're "sister stores"

Holy cow - Dukesdad - are you sure you haven't got a HORSE ? 100lbs ? Wow !
I / Keymo met a yellow lab last week at 120lbs ! That's a LOT of dog !

Yep! One this morning then the other this evening or both in the afternoon. Depends what my schedule is like.

I prefer giving quarters. My Yorkie gets thighs or drumsticks.
The pork hocks are about the size of my fist? lol Something like that.

Hey Keymo,

Poe is 50 lbs (ish, i haven't weighed her lately) and she's all lean muscle. I feed her only once a day so the pork hawks or chicken quarters (or whatever) are 2 as a meal.

Hope this helps! Let us know how your first week goes!
