Can I physically handle the Street Safety Course? Posted: 7 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 2
This question is for the CET's and/or Brad, but hearing from those that have taken the course will help too.

Brad is supposed to be coming back to Toronto this summer to do the Street Safety Course. I've been to a seminar already, I watch the show, I've had successes already with his methods. But, I really really want to be able to attend the Street Safety Course. After seeing the first episode of Season 3, where it shows some of the course, I am concerned my knees won't be able to handle all that fast-paced movement. Do we all have to stick together, what IS the pace actually like? If I can go, I will give it 100% effort, but I can only do a fast paced walk or a very slow jog at the most, just to give an idea. Basically, my knees (both) can give out on me if I just step the wrong way, so frustrating (and painful).

Thanks,
Bonnie

I was thinking the same thing. I am not the smallest person to put that lightly. The main reason why I got Jada was to help get me out of the house and exercise which is helping but I still have a long way to go. Running I can do but not for long periods. I would be interested to see what the response is on this.

It is SUPER fast paced running around obsticles and jumping over them ect. It is very physical! As for how your knees would stand up well it depends if its only a fast paced walk you will be hurting cause its lots of jogging try it out what is the worst that can happen you cant complete it all???

I did the condensed street safety in Ottawa after Brad's seminar. Let's just say I'm not in great shape and both my knees are screwed up but we managed. There is alot of running but we managed pretty good. I think it may be easier in the summer when you're not wearing bulky coats and boots etc etc!! There were people who could run the whole thing and people who couldn't. I have a feeling he would adjust the activity level depending on how hot/humid it is more for the dogs than the people! Both Ottawa and Toronto can be beastly humid in the summer, I don't know how humid Calgary gets but I know it does get really hot.

Thanks everyone. I have a feeling whenever Brad does come back, as much as I would want to attend, I think I will not go. I can do a slow job, but not for long. I am too conscious of my knees and it wouldn't take much for one or both to give out on me, and that would be that. I will keep doing umbilical etc...on my own instead...and watch End of My Leash too, of course!

Is there someone who could go with you to do more of the physical aspects of it? That way you can still watch and learn, and not miss out. Brad's street safety class is so much more than just the physical exercise. Yes there is jogging, quick turns etc, but that's not ALL it is. My husband and I are both ok with doing the physical aspect (his knee acts up when doing the turns, but he has since learned to wear his knee brace), but we switch off during class so we're both participating in the training. It's easy to follow the class and have it be less of a physical strain than doing the whole thing on your own. Do you have some good knee braces to wear just in case? Honestly, anyone could hurt themselves, whether it's training your dog or going up and down stairs to slipping on the sidewalk on your way to your car, but you should try not to let physical constraints get in your way, otherwise you'll find yourself missing out on something that could be really important down the line! I would really encourage you to try and attend, and bring a friend to do the hard physical parts that you don't feel comfortable with!
