Invisible Fence - success or failure ? Posted: 7 Months ago Karma: 12
Anyone bought & tried it?
What success or failure did you have ?
I can only imagine what the cost would be to fence in my yard PLUS I really don't want the look of a fence ruining my view of the river .

Personally, I don't think they should be allowed. At all.

Sure, it will keep your dog in, (assuming your dog isn't of one of the many breeds with a high enough pain tolerance to not even feel it and pass right through without a second thought,) but what does it keep out? Will it keep other dogs from getting in and cornering your dog - who can't escape because of the invisible fence? Will it keep people from walking in and stealing your dog - which should be of big concern, as pet thefts have been greatly on the rise in 2008, so an invisible fence is just asking your your dog to disappear. Does it keep anyone safer?

Assuming it does keep your dog in, do people walking nearby know that? I know a German Shepherd around here had his head split open with a rock because he was behind an invisible fence, and a man walking with his children saw the dog running down. He had no idea, he just knew that his children were there and a large dog was running towards them, so he threw a rock and hit it. Certainly not his fault - I'd assume that I needed to protect myself before I'd assume an invisible fence was going to save me.

This is all, of course, assuming that the thing even works. Any number of things could go wrong that let your dog pass through, and there you go, you've lost your dog.

Really, I would hope that the wellbeing of your dog and people around you is more important than "your view of the river."

Ok i have not bought one HOWEVER i have heard of dogs that learn how to manipulate them. Dogs that have learnt to drain the batteries in the collar and then RUN like the wind!!!! I have also heard of dogs that have found one spot in the fence as they pace the perimeter and then take off when they dont feel a shock. Some dogs also become immune to the shock as well they are crap and a scam and i would say they really dont work its easier and safer to just put up a fence!!

P.S Way to go Kat some of those reasons i hadn\'t even thought of 2 thumbs up for u! U earned a Karma

I have an "invisible fence" brand fence and it is the best thing I ever purchased. I too have a ton of property and struggled with how to make my yard safe for my dog. It was easy for them to install- took a couple of hours at most and my dogs- all three (2 senior cocker spaniels and a 5 month old golden retriever) were fully trained on it in 3 weeks. They are happy and safe. I do not leave my dogs outside (with a "real fence" or an invisible fence) without being home myself and have no fears that they will get stolen. They no longer wear their collars as they have learned the boarders- and have never learned to outwit the fence. Infact, if they did, it would be because I did not do the training correctly. This fence has changed things for the positive and my only regret is that I didn't get one sooner.

what do u do about keeping other animals off your property such as another dog that could possibly mame or kill one of your cockers or u?? ( i know u said u dont keep them outside when your not around but some people do) that is how the dogs learned to out smart them. Glad to hear you dont leave them unattended as most owners would mostly cause they think of it as a real fense and we all know how many dogs get left out sittin in their yards

Personally I wouldn't have one, especially in the country, too many other critters that I wouldn't particularly want in my yard, which is fenced.

Now I'm confused. You paid to install an invisible fence... and now you don't use it? o.o Haven't we seen Brad do this "border training" kind of thing with two Shih Tzus, but, without a fence? And without having to resort to shocking them to train them. Isn't that just a scare tactic? They stay inside the fence because they're afraid of getting shocked, not because they care what you want them to do. Wait until one of them realizes that the fence isn't there anymore.

Besides, you being around might help them from being stolen, (they wouldn't be the first dogs this year to be stolen right out of the yard with the owners all of 50 feet away, some have even been stolen at gunpoint, so all you're really doing is advertising your dogs free for the taking,) but what about other dogs? I promise, if some 150 lbs stray decides he wants to lunch on one of your Cockers, there isn't a thing in the world you can do to stop him.

A fence might, though.

WHOA !
Didn't mean to open up a can of nasty worms here ! Let's calm down ! I was looking for ADVICE as we all do here on this site, not a verbal reprimanding as I feel has been dished out.

If someone has seen an episode where Brad Perimeter trained a dog please explain to me how to do that.

So everyone knows - I do NOT take a "view of the river" more seriously than the safety of my dog ! His "comfort zone" is farther than we feel is safe for him to be running loose around my home/area. Maybe this is because we've started him at an off leash park during the winter first, now we are trying to teach him to remain on our property. Maybe we should have done this in reverse - but - we all make mistakes and now that I am being given the proper training tools from Brad, his show, his book and having seen him in person at a seminar I feel I'm doing better than I could possibly imagine.

I don't like keeping him tied up on a cable in my yard NOR do I feel it's fair to keep him in his pen all day. He is not outside alone unless he is in his pen which is LOCKED.
At the moment I cannot afford to have my yard fenced so I thought this may be an option.

I will NEVER be able to keep other wild animals OR cats or dogs out of my yard, but those who choose to "visit" are well aware of my dog and keep their distance. I even had 3 wolves running by my yard 100' away from my dog who was outside with me, tied up on his cable while they ran by.I freaked but they or my dog didn't!

Congratulations to you Sadiesmom - for using it AS A TOOL to train your dogs. And now that they KNOW how to behave, I'm happy for you that you don't have to use it anymore. It wasn't a waste of money , it was $ well spent for you.

I'm going to look into the cost of the invisible fence vs. a privacy fence. I've heard a lot of great things about the actual "invisible fence" brand fence, there's about 3 other ladies at obedience class that have them, and love them. I would prefer a privacy fence (I live on a corner lot with some odd neighbours ), but the invisible fence might be an option for now. I've been working on perimeter training with Shiloh, and she' either just not getting it, or incredibly stubborn. Keymo, I don't like keeping Shiloh tied up all the time either, she really needs to run, but there's no where I can take her.

Melg - could you please explain how to do perimeter training ?
I may have scared everyone off with my last post.

Sorry to all if I sounded rough - I wanted to be sure everyone knows that I TOTALLY care for my dog and I want to do the BEST for him.
