dog back packs...thoughts? Posted: 5 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 3
Hi everyone,

Just wondering what your thoughts (& Brad\'s, if he would like to chime in) are on doggie \"backpacks\". I know from watching Cesar Millan, he often advocates them for certain dogs that need \"a job\", but he also feels they can help any dog and can even be used to put weights in the give the certain dogs that need it a better work-out.

I was at a street festival on the weekend and the pet shop there had a fantastic sale, some things up to 70% off! i got a \"outward hound\" urban adventure backpack for a great price, i couldn\'t say no! i got a large size, as Sadie is still a pup and not full grown, so i am not able to try it out yet, but i figure when she is large enough she can wear it and i can put a water bottle for her (and me), some poop bags and maybe some cash in there for our long walks. i often go for 2.5 hour walks several times a week and the other days at least an hour, in addition to meeting friends for a doggie play session at a nearby field.

does anyone else use one of these? how do you and our doggie find them?

Jo

I purchased a backpack for my gsd but have not used it with any weight in it . My Vet said I shouldnt put weight in it until he is at least 18 months, as being a large breed dog they are still growing and don't want to put strain on his joints. We do put poop bags some cash (just in case the ice cream truck passes) and his folding water dish. On hot days a frozen water bottle on either side would be awesome! But if its to hot i wouldn't even use it!
When I put it on him he is so proud! It is almost like he is showing off!!!

Hey Jo,

We have had backpacks for our labs for 2 years now, and we think they are great! In the summer season, the boys don't wear them(too hot) but in the winter, spring, and fall we often put them on for the walks. We use bottled water for weight and it does help when your dog is hyper active, plus we always have water for them. We have also stopped at the store on our walks and share the grocery load with them, as we load them up they kind of look like they know we are asking for help carrying things home and look a little prouder.

Hi salsajo: I bought the same Outward Hound backpack at Woofstock this week-end. Jessie will need to grow into it though - we've got a 5 month old Yellow Lab and bought a large I'm looking forward to using it.

I have one too for Bayley. Comes in very handy. I wouldn't use it really hot weather either.

We sell them at the store and people love them, haven't hear a bad thing about them yet (other than the price). They are great for the hiking/camping part of pet life as well, they can carry their own food and bowls and poop bags with out you worrying about them.
I freaking love them. My dog is the type that needs a 'job'.
