Re:Pinning Posted: 9 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 12
I watched Brad do the pinning at the seminar with a couple of dogs. What I am reading here is way off base, especially Krystal.(no offence). There was another post on here about pinning and they made it sound like a backyard wrestling match. You do not just grab the dog, put him down and make him say uncle. If you are unsure what to do, don't attempt it. When one dog tried to roll over Brad straightened him to stop him from rolling. He knew from the previous repitition which way he was going to go. It is not always easy. Though 1 dog a sweetie named Porscha, went along like she enjoyed it with little effort.
Again, if you are not sure, DO NOT attempt until you know what you are doing. Remember if you try, you cannot lose.

On occasion when Dukes being really arrogant and out of line, I've grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and flipped him on his back. Very quickly. I think it works mostly for shock value. But this is not what Brad means by pinning. Not even close.

I do agree. Pinning isn't something that you should be doing if you are not totally sure on how to do it. I hadn't tried it and I'm glad I didn't until I seen it being done on Saturday. I would have done it totally wrong.

katabby...........wasn't Porscha funny she was almost like a rag doll. What a cutie she was

Katabby,
I read your post on what you do when Duke becomes arrogant and out of line, and that is what I was talking about in my earlier post. But I don't just flip him on his back - I am very gentle and put him onto his side because I heard that it can hurt their spine if you put them onto their back in that manner, depending on the surface,(?) and I also do not want to hurt his hips.
It is not a " Backyard Wrestling Match". My vet had explained the above technique to me to use when he is out of line/arrogant, and I assumed wrongly that it was called pinning.
I now have Brad's book and understand that I was not familiar with what HE calls PINNING, and see that I should not have used the word PINNING in my post. I am also going to one of the seminars and will learn more there.
With all that said, Thank you for your concern on my technique and the safety of my dog and myself.

Yes, at the Toronto seminar I remember a girl asking about her dog rolling during the pinning exercise. I believe Brad told her not to let it roll over. He said to try and straighten the dog out and avoid it twisting or rolling and watch for it's movements & preferences to try to predict how your dog will try to avoid being pinned. I also remember he said try to adjust your grip for maximum control and safety with the thumbs under each side of dogs jaw. Maybe that will help. I think you should keep trying at this exercise but that's just my understanding from what I heard and saw.

That was me!!!! Now, thanks to Brad's tip about anticipating when Shiloh is going to roll during the pinning exercise, I'm able to successfully pin her. She was a little bit put out at first, because I figured her out. She's still not real happy about it, but I'm being persistant, and she's starting to get it through her head that mom's not the pushover she used to be!!

I would definitely recommend to anyone who's able, go to one of the seminars. Even though I'd purchased Brad's book, there were some things that I wasn't doing right, i.e. the pinning, and some of the corrections. During the seminar, I realized I was way too slow with my corrections. It makes such a difference to actually see Brad in action! The seminar is worth the money--don't miss it!!!!!

This is one that I'm going to pay attention to more closely at the seminar. I know I'm doing it wrong because I'm not doing 20-25 reps. I just do 5 or 6 but Sasha is really stubborn so I guess I should keep at it. She bites at my hands and wrists when I do it so I find it's quite the struggle with her to move my hands out of her teeth's way but I wonder if I should just not try to do that and just let her scratch and bite me - it's more of a scratching me with her teeth kinda thing - and just work through it until we get it right and just nurse my scratches later...
