Doggy dooley, anyone use them? Posted: 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago

Thinking about getting a doggy dooley, and wondering if anyone on here uses one? How often do you need to empty it? (I have one dog that will be large when she's full grown, but may get another when she's older) Do they smell? My yard isn't huge, but really don't want to smell it if the wind kicks up. Do you have to leave it sit to digest for a year before it's composted? Thinking I might need to get a second one when it's time to empty it? Or do your just leave it over the Winter? We can still put our pet waste in the garbage, or flush, but not too good for the environment, so looking for solutions.

You're feeding Raw aren't you? If so, the poop shouldn't smell, it actually crumbles when dry. We use these little black poop bags we buy from our local per store (not a chain store) and they're biodegradable. We just put them in with our regular garbage can at the curb.

In BC, most municipalities its illegal to add waste to your household garbage and can be fined. Check your yellow pages for a company that will pick up the waste once a week, its generally cheap. We use doggiedetail here, and its cheap, I leave the can they provide out front of the house and they get rid of the waste legally and safely. Raw poo is definetly better than kibble poo tho!

I'm curious about this doggy dooley as well.. where can you get one? and will the neighbours smell us? we've got a lab, and a regular sized city yard with a 6 ft fence... Do they have those biodegradable bags that hold large sized poops too? or just little wee bags?

We had one years ago when we lived in the city. It worked great but we left it behind when we moved. My husband refused to humour me and take it with us For now we just pick up the yard with biodegradable bags and put it at the curb. Not illegal here. I certainly would consider having one again. You get an accelerant with the purchase, and will need to repurchase the accelerant later in future. My neighbours never complained about odour. Dorothy

We had a dooley in our last house and it was great!!! The main thing is making sure that you keep adding water and digester to it as needed. It had a smell when I'd fill it but nothing that bothered my neighbors.

sorry, forgot to subscribe to the post, and felt like a complete idiot when I realised that it wasn't being ignored. (happens on some groups) Yes, I'm using the biodegradable bags too, and there is no smell, but was worried that after a year, there might be a difference. Also, found out that you can't dig the composted poo into your garden if you want to ever grow food there, so will be planting roses around it next year. You can order them online from many suppliers, or can make your own with a Rubbermaid garbage can. Just cut out the bottom, drill holes all the way around the outside, bury it completely in the dirt (dig out a few feet below and fill with gravel first) and just lift the lid when you need to. You do need the digester but it's the same stuff for septic systems, so easy to find. You have to have a second one ready to go when it is full if you want to fully compost the poo before digging out the good stuff at the bottom, or you will have a lot of yuck to deal with. (I wonder if I can just put in a big tank and have the septic guys suck it out every ten years?) ha haa haaa!
