when i was crate training my 6mo old dane ...well 3 months ago, about the crate I would put him in it and go into my office, have a shower, do dishes, etc. So that it was a good place to be and I started with short stays in the crate with me home many times a day, which got him settled into staying in the crate over night. I put him in it with his favorite tug toy or a frozen washcloth, not sure if thats acceptable but it obviously worked! Now its his safe place, he puts himself to bed when he's tired

I would do like ShortStack suggested and remember not to open the door if your dog is whining or making any noise. I would make sure that Abby was in a sit and calm before opening the door. When I found that the short periods in her crate weren't working, I just let her cry. Took a day and then she was fine. I trained her during the day because I have kids and a cranky husband.

Also, before a training session or anytime you put him, make sure he gets a good workout before hand.

Good luck!
