Puppies and their POOP Posted: 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi there
My 13 week pup is having 3 to 4 poops a day,,,,,that's the good part. We have her on Orijen puppy. I've been told that's a good brand. She is 23lbs and gets 3 1/4 cups spread out in 3 meals.
Here's my concern,,,,The first 2 poops in the a.m. are well formed and solid. The third one is formed but very soft and the last one is,,,,lets say you have to wipe it up. The last bm isn't alway that loose but it is the softest of the 4. She always holds till she gets outside and hasn't had a accident in the house.(Thank goodness). I'll take a sample stool to the Vet for lab work on Monday.
Has anyone had similar situation?
Thanks
Marty

One other thing,,, the pup is still full of energy, drinks lots of fresh water gets and shows no signs of illness.

I don't know why that would be. Seems like a lot of poops per day though.

Good you're getting it tested to put away any worries.

I thought pups poop more than a adult dog. The pug goes 1 to 2 times per day. My other Borders were the same as the pug. I was told that for every meal a pup has expect a poop. Maybe I heard wrong. I notice she has been eating grass, but that's not unusual for pups,,,everything goes into the mouth.

Puppies do poop more then adults... So dont be alarmed... You are giving them excellent food.. My suggestion is that maybe you are giving too much... WHen giving more protien then they require their stools are loose and sometimes runny... Try giving about 1/4 cup less then recommened or the miminimal amount listed on the bag minus the 1/4 cup and work your way to firmer poo... If the puppy is still hungry after their feedings you can add green beans to their diet..it is just a filler so your arent adding more kibble... All puppies should be dewormed regularly until about 4 months old..Good luck..

Thanks 4Shelties4me
"If the puppy is still hungry after their feedings you can add green beans to their diet..it is just a filler " How much do you recommend,,enough to make up the 1/4 cup difference?

I woudl say that would be good... I would only give it at one meal and see how it goes.. if there isnt any ill effect then give at both meals.. spread over a weeks time.. like 1/4 cup once a day..then slowly increase..watch the poop make sure its hard dry and not smelly.. I have switched my guys to the orijen..and they are liking it and doing very well on it..

A quick update
As it turns out the pup had issues with the high % of protein in Orijen. I switched to Acana and within 2 days the poop is perfect,,,,,
