Totally clear Mel; I wish it did just come down to 'dog owers'...it's just such a larger issue than that.
Dale just told me of an incident that happened at Hampton Park. I thought for sure this was the same owner and dog you were talking about, so I had to go over your story to check...you said golden, Dale said Yellow lab...you tell me.
Anyways, it was the same scenario, two ladies with five dogs on leashes. This woman is walking her yellow lab off leash, she has been asked before to at least leash him/her up for them to go by, refused. The dog came at them this time, teeth bearing, snarling, barking....at that point the woman rushed over and leashed her dog up........AND SAID NOTHING!
I really felt like it was the same person and dog and she had just moved to another location.

I dont think it is possible for "us" to change anyone. Just like bad kids and bad drivers there will always be people out there who make their own rules and reason them out. In their mind they think they are right. Even though your beef is not with by law it is still important to keep in touch with them as they are really the only ones ( or ncc or cops) that can enforce the rules. Like all people who break the law sooner or later they are caught and if there is documentation then there is less of a chance of them getting off easily.

I stopped walking my dogs during "peak" hours for the same reason. I just had to as my health was at stake and I had to let it go. That's why I like the Dog house get togethers so much even though my mutt is not the best behaved at least I am around like minded people who are willing to help her.

I realize there isnt a way to change everyone, but even to educate one is better than none I hope. I find pet ownership for alot of people isnt really what it should be. There is a definate lack of accountability and responsibility. Even something as simple as cleaning up after your dog is a foreign concept to some.... Its so aggravating, but I just do the best I can to educate people and hope that somewhere down the line it clicks.

Anne, sounds like the EXACT same situation, but our incident was with a Golden for sure, gorgeous dog, but the owner has obviously not corrected many issues they have. Same thing though, off leash dog goes after on leash dog (who is already in a losing position as movement is restricted).Isnt amazing how fast they BOLT!? No name, phone # nothing. Of course, without tackling them they flee the situation as quickly as possible to escape responsibility. I have learnt next time (fingers crossed we dont have to, but with our luck, I am sure it will happen again!) to get the information, no matter what I need to do to ensure the proper vaccinations are there, and to ensure there is accountability to the owner. I carry Nitro's copy of vet records with me in my car and copies of his documents, should I need them in an emergency. This lady whose dog attacked Philly argued with us and then rushed away, she did say the dog was up to date on shots and Philly seems fine. We got lucky thats for sure.

I really enjoyed the gathering at the Dog House the last time we made it out. To put names to faces was a great oppertunity as it was so long since we had all seen each other, and after Brad's 3 hour winter boot camp, no one stayed around LOL Hopefully we make it out to the next one as I found I got alot of feedback from everyone on Nitro's behaviours that I want to work on and would love to get some advice on current issues we have. For me, those few hours spent with Anne and everyone was the most education I have gotten since owning Nitro. At the dog park, we go at 5-6 am.. or late at night to avoid the problem crowds.. so its nice to have the Dog House open its doors for us once a month to be able to relax and enjoy our dogs and learn something new!

Wen- Cocoa is doing so well! It was such a huge difference from when we first met in the winter to the Dog House Gathering. Dont give up! She is a diamond in the rough who just needs a bit more polishing and then she will really shine as they say!!!
