As long as we're talking fish, I buy Keymo large bags of frozen smelts at the Food Basics. the last time it was $10 for 2 huge bags. They have the guts & head removed but it's cheaper than the larger whole smelts.
Yup. you have to defrost them in order to separate them (and ewww they smell) but Keymo LOVES them. He preferes them frozen or semi-frozen. Usually he'll get a couple with every meal.
MMMM smeltcycles

Thanks everybody! Good news, my hubby just called and wanted info on feeding RAW. A co-worker of his would like to start feeding RAW and she wants more information so I\'ll be emailing her some of the websites suggested here. Another convert!

You know - here's proof of how good Raw can be for a dog.
Just a little while ago we all had dinner (like a pack. When WE eat, Keymo eats).
Anyway, we all started eating at the same time. We had chicken potatoes and a salad and Keymo had 2 chicken legs, 2 small pieces of beef liver, 1 piece of frozen beef bone (with sinew ect) 1 chunk of beef heart a porch chop (no bone) and 2 smelts.
Yup - I always give him a variety.
Spoiled ? NAWWWWW

anyway, we started eating at 5pm. We were done in 20 minutes, while Keymo took 45 minutes. All the time chewing, knawing , chomping away.
When he was done I looked at the clock and said to hubby - That was GREAT for his teeth , gums and digestion - 45 minutes. WE should only take so long to eat !
Think how long it used to take him to eat a bowl of kibble ? 5 minutes !!!

That's 45 minutes of a good mental workout too.

I sure wouldn't say I am obsessive or I wouldn't feed raw at all, but I appreciate your point. Just as I would hope that you would appreciate it doesn't mean people are obsessive if they prefer that thier dog doesn't drink out of thier glass (whatever she ate, I wouldn't allow that, but that is just me), and I like to wipe down paws if she uses it to tear meat off the bone. Different strokes for different folks, but hey I sure appreciate all the knowledge I am getting here to add to my four year experience with raw. Thanks to all the encouragement I went back to raw and stood firm when Hannah turned her nose up and tried the hunger strike method of manipulation that she has used on me for the past 4 months.

Now she is back to happily eating drumsticks and quarters and next week we'll add another protien. So thanks for all the information, we'll agree to disagree on clean up afterwards!

ps the study my exhusband brought home to "fight" me on raw was done at the UC Berkly university.... It was in a medical journal. But as I said, I had no personal bad experiences with my child getting sick, just the opposite, in fact.

Glad to see you don't get offended easily.
You're right, agree to disagree.
When Duke doesn't want to eat, it's rare, i'll slip him a couple of his frozen smelts. I usually use them for snacks, and he can't resist them.
I think they get his stomach juices and appetite going. might be cheating, but whatever works for you.

With Hannah, Dukesdad, because she was starved and neglected when I got her (19ibs to her now 48) she soon figured out how to manipulate me by refusing to eat. After reading all the posts here I dug in my heels and decided she wouldn't starve herself again so I kept offering and then when she wouldn't eat, I'd put it away until next feeding. It took one missed meal for a drumstick to look pretty darn good to her!

I love the frozen idea, I bet that would get her organ meat into her, she will NOT and I mean NOT eat that, hmmmmmm

than ks for the tips!
