more puppy questions Posted: 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi all!,

Well I have 2 questions. One is why does my puppy not be interested in walking too much. I try to take her out to the bathroom and she just doesn't move sometimes. I pretty much have to coax her and pull a bit on her leash( She had a harness right now and no umbilical yet. Is this her being stubborn and trying to control the situation?

My other question is how can I train my puppy not to bark at everything? I want to teach her early so that she doesn't bark all the time and for no reason or when someone comes.

Thanks!

How long have you had your puppy?

When I got Bobbie, he used to always lay down during walks and I'd end up carrying him back home because he didn't want to go for a walk. Now he loves going for his walks and is pretty good on umbilical.

I guess the first question would be how old is your puppy. A lot of young puppies don't like walking on a leash, but really, can you blame them?? Its sort of like having a child on a leash, you have to train them to walk. Pups don't naturally grow up walking on leashes everywhere, being controlled on where to walk .

DO NOT LET HER WIN!!! don't pick her up and carry her, especially if its just going out to pee. thats not too much for any puppy to walk im sure, no matter the age, however if your pup is really young and your going for long walks, make sure you think about how much the pup may be able to walk before getting tired out. Im not so sure if she is trying to control the situation or if she is just not used to walking on a leash, but like i said, don't pick her up unless you think its very nessecary. Maybe if you tell us how old and what type of pup she is it would help a bunch of us here on the forums on how much she should be able to walk at whatever age she is.

Training for barking, what all is she barking at? when something comes to the door, or movement outside or?? if you could explain the situation it will help alot too but ill just suggest taking your pup out to different places so she gets used to all the sights, sounds and excitement around her home. I would suggest different parks, out by a childs playground, maybe some stores that lets pets inside, walks by busy roads, basically just your everyday things. This way she won't be afraid of the normal sights, sounds, smells that go with the natural world. But yeah, explain your situation as to what all she barks at and it will help us all understand your situation a whole bunch more.

Hope this helps as "generalized info" to help get your pup on the right start

Walking - how interesting are you making yourself when you walk? I was out last night with Abby, my friend's two small dogs and her dad's dog - who is just 9 weeks old. The puppy was all over the place, but as soon as you called her, BAM she came running ...

I remember when I was walking Abby as a puppy, it was much easier for her to focus on me if I was interesting, not everything else around her ...

Good luck,

Marion

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES.

WELL SHE'S 3 MONTHS OLD. I USUALLY TAKE HER TO THE BATHROOM AND WALK AROUND OUR YARD WHICH IS BIG. ONCE SHE'S DONE I'LL RUN WITH HER ON THE LEASH AND SAY HUSTLE! BUT SOME DAYS SHE GETS IN A MOOD WHERE SHE'LL TUG AND THEN STEP IN FRONT OF US AND TUG ON OUR PANT LEGS AND THE MORE I TRY TO PULL HER BACK AND SAY NO BITING SHE COMES AT US ALL THE MORE. SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO KEEP REPEATING NO BITING ALL THE TIME, BUT I DON'T WANT TO JUST STAND THERE AND LET HER DO IT EITHER!

SHE'LL ALSO BARK AT ME WHEN I'M TRYING TO GIVE HER ORDERS. WHEN I TELL HER DOWN AND SHE KEEPS COMING UP SHE'LL KEEP BARKING AND WHEN I YELP AFTER SHE BITES SHE'LL BARK.
