Training without treats Posted: 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi there

I am have just gotten a Fila puppy that is 8 weeks old, the training has begun but I do not want to train with treats seeing how I am due to have a baby in two months. I do not want the puppy stealing or looking for food. It is very important to us that we have a well trained puppy seeing how a Fila is a "guardian" breed and she must respect and obey us. What is the best method and most effective way to train without treats? we give her tons of praise with lots of petting when she does things correctly. I feel that the most challenging aspect is going to be the "come" without a food reward. She comes sometimes but other times she blocks me out. I do not want her to think that she can only come when she wants. Any suggestions of methods or resources that deal with training without treats would be greatly appreciated.

Get Brad's e-book, it covers a lot. I have it and it is well worth the $30 you spend.

With Bayley, I don't really remember using treats to get her to come. I didn't let her off leash until I had her for about 2 months. She was 14 weeks when I got her. The first time I did let her off leash, it was just her and me on a trail. No problems, never have had a problem with her with coming. Lots of praise when she came back, even when she jumped all over me covered in black bog mud..ah well that's a puppy for you! I must admit I was leary letting her off as she's half husky and I'd heard all the horror stories about letting huskies off leash as they'll never come back and just run and run.

Hi
You can also get the first 2 chapters free, if you look on the home page at the right side. They are all about new puppies. This may help in your training. But I also agree with purchasing the whole book, it is well worth the money.
Good luck and Congrads on the new family member.

We started training with treats at a "puppy school" oh what a mistake. it took us forever to fix that mistake. One thing that they did teach us was to sound super excited when you call them, sound like you are the single most exciting thing on the planet and they will usually come to you followed by huge praise like in the neighbourhood of 30 seconds worth of it, time yourself 30 seconds is a lot longer than you think
