no feeding schedule Posted: 11 Months, 4 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi, I have to report that our little mixed breed dog Ani used to actually throw up if we didn't feed her by a certain time every morning, and our Lab pup was waking me up anywhere between 5:30a.m. and 6:00a.m. every day (and getting earlier!), moaning and crying to be fed. We took Brad's advice to NOT feed them at a certain time, mixing the times up every day and it works great! Now they don't "hound" us constantly because they never know when it's going to come. It also makes it easier because we can feed them at different times depending on the day and when someone will be around to let them outside to the bathroom afterwards. And yes, they complained for a few days, but they get over it, it's harder on us humans than it is on them!

do you leave food out for them? or do they finish it right away? if not? why should you not leave the food out... mags eats when she is hungry so it sits all day...

To "The Mags"
What your doing is called free feeding and does not make you the ALPHA. Your dog should be fed once or twice a day and for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes is up the dish gets picked up untill the next feeding, which is to be done at different times everyday. Remember, no routine!

Crista is right. This is a big no-no. Free feeding doesn't make the dog realize that the food comes from you. We use to be similar in how we would feed our dogs. After we started training with Brad we changed that and now the dogs eat all of their food as soon as it goes down. They know if they don't eat it right away we will take it away from them. We are in control of everything, even their food.

Hi.. our dogs are fed only raw food so it couldn't be left out, but the answer is no, we don't leave it out. If they don't eat it right away, it's taken away from them, and trust me, as soon as it's put in front of them and they're told "ok", they're all over it and it's gone! Makes it much easier to control when they'll need to go to the bathroom. Sometimes I feed them at 6am, sometimes at noon, sometimes at 5 or 6pm, depends on what OUR schedule is like. Ours don't get any treats whatsoever.
