Sherry Turuk

My name is Sherry Turuk and I was born and raised in Brooks, Alberta.  I have been married for 30 years and blessed with two daughters, a son-in-law and two grandchildren. I own two Shetland Sheep dogs and enjoy spending time bonding with my dogs by undertaking activities that are stimulating and physically challenging for my dogs and myself. I have developed a social network with other dog owners in my community and have taken notice of the community’s need for dog and dog owner services and programs. I recognized an opportunity to provide services to dogs and dog owners in Brooks and seized this opportunity by taking the Brad Pattison Certified Trainer Educator program. I am now well-equipped to deliver training services to dogs and dog owners in my community.

My professional goals are to:

  • Advocate a healthy lifestyle that fully engages dogs and their owners

  • Provide dog owners with tools and techniques to improve their dog’s behaviors

  • Foster a community-wide dog owner network that connects dog owners, provides a support system and forum for dialoguing about the challenges and joys of dog ownership and provides opportunities for dog owners to access support systems and professional services

I understand that many families lead busy lives. The tools and techniques that I will provide will enable owners to better incorporate their dogs into their daily lives, resulting in decreased stress, ensuring dog’s needs are met and improved dog and owner health and well-being.

If you could have better would good be good enough?

Watching people struggle with their dogs prompted me to look for something better.  In the city that I live in there isn’t a positive outlet for people to be educated on building that strong bond with their dogs.  I have taken the treat method of training with my dog and found that for us it only worked some of the time and that my dog didn’t respect me at all (he only respected the food).

I had watched Brad’s show “At the End of My Leash” and was impressed with the methods that he was teaching.  After attending one of Brad’s seminars I contacted his assistant inquiring about taking an educator course.  A couple months later I was informed that Brad was offering the course.  I jumped at the opportunity.  Being from a small city of fourteen thousand with no training of this type available I see this as a great opportunity to educate and create an incredible bond between dog owner’s and their dogs.

Through taking this training I have realized that being educated about myself and my dog has helped me in my personal relationships with people and with dogs.  This has empowered me not take second best.
