  On my favorite blanket

Hello everyone! Did you see me on TV last week? Wow, there were a lot of shows. Not sure if anyone recognized me in my younger years, but I was in the very first episode of 'At The End of My Leash'! I was only 12 weeks old and I wouldn't even walk on leash! I was so tenacious my mom thought I would never want to go for walks:) Ha! Isn't that far from the truth! Really, I was just testing her, as we canines like to do to our owners...
Her hard work paid off, as I was then able to become a regular on the show... I must admit I miss those cameras and all the attention from the film crew and our morning meetings...
I went snow shoeing this past weekend which was tons of fun. What a work out! I was kapooped the entire next day! Hopefully I can go back this weekend. I was even allowed on the chair lift to the top of the hill. I was hoping to get a good view of where all the bunnies like to hide in the trees, but no luck. I could smell them though!
The picture of Bailey, who was the runner up for last weeks Best in Snow contest kind of looks like me when I am not wearing my booties- Bailey, I know what you went through buddy;)
Well, I am off to go lounge in my super comfy dog bed and have a snooze....

Is there any chance Rudy will be joining Brad at the seminars in Hamilton or Kitchener? I would love to meet Rudy!

Yes, there is a chance that

Yes, there is a chance that Rudy will be there.. he has to check his schedule to make sure it's clear though:)

What kind of Dog is Rudy?

What kind of Dog is Rudy?

Rudy is a Schnoodle, His mom

Rudy is a Schnoodle, His mom is a parti colored Schnauzer and his father is an apricot colored Poodle.

I just adopted a 3-year-old

I just adopted a 3-year-old Jack Russell from local shelther. While we haven't noticed any toy and food aggression (that's what the shelter said), he definitely has fear aggression.

One day he was on one of our chairs (I know, no dogs on furniture). I walked towards him and he rolled onto his back. I thought it's belly rub time, when I touched him, he started growling. I told him NO, and he actually turned his head away (so he broke eye contact). I continued to yell at him and he bit me, hard enough that I had to get stitches.

He hasn't showed any other signs of aggression afterwards. Although he started licking ALL the walls out of the blue, and peeing in the house. I wonder if he's developing separation anxiety (from not caring in the beginning to like us enough to not want us to leave). I think I need more help. Could you please connect me to one of your trainers in Toronto?

PS Rudy, you are absolutely adorable. You should be every dog's role model =)

Hi Rudy,

I have two shih tzu's, ages 9 and 8. In the winter when it's too cold to take them outside, they enjoy going on the treadmill. How long should I allow them on, and should they be walking, trotting or running on it?

PS - say Hi to Brad for me !

Hi Shawnna,

It can be a challenge in the winter months to have our dogs get proper exercise. With Rudy, he has a coat and booties that I put on him when it is colder than -12ish. We don't like to endorse dogs on the treadmill, as it can lead to injury and there have been incidents where it has lead to death. Rather, when it really is too cold to take the dogs out for their walks, play mental games indoors, like Hide and Seek. You can take one of their favorite toys, but the dog/s in one room, in a sit stay, and then hide the toy somewhere. On your command, let the dogs go find the toy. Start with easy hiding places and gradually make them harder. This is great for patience training, and mental stimulation.

I absolutely love this show

I absolutely love this show and we started watching this a little over a year ago... in advance of getting our Bulldog pup "JD" who is now a little over a year old. Just wondering if you have come across other bulldogs at all... I've never seen them on the show. We've done all right with him, although we did do some treat training.. the only thing that bugs us is the jumping up and how excited he gets with visitors.. I can't get him out of it. I've put the knee up to stop him and I have pulled him down.. trying to keep my actions quick but he doesn't really care... any tips. Hopefully I can make it out to the Feb 6th training session in Toronto!!

Hi Rudy,

I see Brad will be in Edmonton for a seminar. I'd really like to meet him. What goes on at a seminar.

I wanted to thank you as

I wanted to thank you as watching your show changed my relationship with the brittany spaniol I adopted at age 5. Your teachings bettered the last few years of our life together! Sadly, she passed away in December... :-(
In need for another 4 legged friend, I was able to adopt another brittany spaniol born Nov 7 2009 and she has been with us for the past couple of weeks.
I am about to start a semi-private puppy class and know from your show treats are a big no no!
If treats are not acceptable, are my praises enough to teach my puppie good manners? Should I not use my voice but only body language when traing her, as you so often say to owners not to speak to their dog?
Also, what about giving peanut butter in the kong chewing toy or another dental chewing bone? Are those considered treats or simply pain releif for their ever so great chewing needs?
Finally, when at the vet, they always have liver treats for your dog. Should I continue refusing tose?
Thanking you in advance for making my puppie's life better with your help.
Chantal, from Montreal, Quebec.

Hello Chantal, We are sorry

Hello Chantal,
We are sorry to hear that your brittany spaniol passed away at such an early age, but we are sincerely happy to hear that you had such a great last few years with her.
Your praises are definitely enough for your new puppy:)
Just think, moms and dads of dogs don't go around handing out treats to their young because they have done a good job. Knowing what expectations you want with your dog and consistency with the those expectations will help with the teaching of manners.
The reason we say no talking to the dog is because we as humans like to talk too much and it can soon become like the Peanuts cartoons.. blah blah blah blah blah blah!
We are not saying never talk to the dog, but be aware of how much you do and how often you are repeating your commands.
Peanut butter is fine once in a while, but be careful not to start using it as a crutch- it is also fattening. Nyla bones are good for teething.
Don't feel like you have to accept treats when you are at the vet- Rudy has never accepted a treat anywhere he goes.. a raw bone from the butcher is his weekly treat and he loves it!

Rudy, you are too handsome!

Rudy, you are too handsome! Such a good role model for the dogs on the show! I am about to rescue a 2 year old husky-mix (she was living wild in a pack in a northern Quebec community), and I was wondering what I shoudl be prepared for. She chews EVERYTHING and is very timid around people. I also have two cats, and am wondering if it's in a huskey's nature to attack cats? Also, is a husky a breed that should never go off-leash (Brad mentioned on an episode that some breeds should not be trusted off-leash)? I would love to hear Brad, Daniela, or anyone else's opinion!

I wish Brad could come train my Dog! Ace Our 3 year old Whippet has totally got our family whipped into what he wants. Its pathetic that my parents will kick me off the couch so that HE can go on, No joke. Wish Brad could knock some sense into my parents Or Maybe Rudy could yell at Ace :P

Wow.. you get kicked off the couch so Ace can get on it? That is crazy! It sounds like it is not the dog that needs the training!

Hi Rudy! Just wondering of you ever make it to manitoba? If you do I would love for you to meet my dog Cura. Maybe you could explain to her that she is not the top dog around and put her in her place a bit. She does'nt seem to listen to anyone but myself and as you know that is not the way to make new friends.

Rudy did make it out to

Rudy did make it out to Winnipeg last September, and maybe heading back this year.. we have to check his schedule:)
Get everyone on board with the training and the rules of the house. No furniture, no human beds. Lots of socialization, mental and physical exercise... have fun!

Hi Rudy - I live in Calgary

Hi Rudy -
I live in Calgary and wished I could have met you. I hope you can help me with my problem ... you see, I collect shoes. I don't wear them or chew on them but I gather as many of my guardian's or her skin-child's shoes or boots that I can and keep them close to me. Sometimes I fall asleep with my nose inside one and I always seem to gather the most at bedtime. I don't want other pups to make fun of me so can you help me understand why I do this?
Thanks,
Jack

Hi Rudy, My name is Odin I am

Hi Rudy,
My name is Odin I am a Newfoundland... When my mom had a human baby I got really insecure and fearful, now with lots of re-socialization and being reminded mom and dad decide if it is dangerous, not me, I am not scared any more...Now I get really really excited to see people and love to ask for lots of pets and snuggles, sometimes I remember to sit politely but often I just wiggle myself back up to standing! Will I remember better to keep my cool when I get a little older? I listen well but sometimes I am just so excited, were you like that when you were a year old like me?

Brad, I too have a Schnoodle,

Brad, I too have a Schnoodle, just over a year old. He is an amazing dog and I love im dearly. On the show, you often say to get rid of toys and to not let the dog on the bed or furniture. Why is this? For the most part my dog is trained. Is this advice you only give to people who have untrained dogs?

hi, Even if the dog is

hi,
Even if the dog is trained you don't want to overspoil them
You do not want to start any habits down the road
If you let them on the furniture, the rules you have enforced so far to make him a well behaved dog might start confusing him if he is aloud on the "masters" bed
Once you give in to one thing, a dog will sometime test to see what else he can get away with.
Hope this helps!

I've found watching your show

I've found watching your show has helped me in training my families new puppy but I do have some questions as I've NEVER trained a puppy before and I'm finding it to be an interesting challenge. He's submissive towards me but still bites (almost as to say hello) but still continues to bite fingers and hands. though the biting doesn't hurt at all he's very gentle, but my husband and I find it very annoying. He also whine's a lot is that a puppy thing? Any help on this matter would be fantastic.

hi He's not really biting,

hi
He's not really biting, he's gnawing, probably because the new teeth coming in
Don't let him nip, gnaw or anything like that on people, instead provide him with a chew toy.
the teeth growing in can become very uncomfortable so by giving him a toy to chew on, it won't start any habits of biting down the road
-When confined to a crate or small room or pen, always give your puppy the benefit of the doubt. When she begins whining, immediately take her to her toilet area.

When he whines:

-Teach your dog to accept isolation and privacy. Accustom your puppy to being left by herself, even if you are home. This will prevent separation anxiety and all the problems that accompany it.

-Make sure your puppy is comfortable. Is your puppy hungry, thirsty, too hot, too cold, uncomfortable, sick, or has lost her toy under the furniture? because she might be whining for these reasons
so make sure it's not food or water etc. before you get mad at her

Rudy you are such a gentlemen

Rudy you are such a gentlemen and might add so handsome, I wish for my 7 month puppy Casey to grow up just like YOU! you are the best.....

I'm really glad Rudy had a

I'm really glad Rudy had a great birthday and visit to Calgary.

One comment regarding his "SNOW SUIT." When Brad was in Vancouver teaching a class he told one lady to take off her dog's sweater. Brad said dogs don't need sweaters, etc. because, well, they're dogs. He was very adamant about it. Even though the dog was shaking he made sure the sweater stayed off.

Just wondering what Brad's opinion on this subject?

Great question about the

Great question about the sweater thing... With those of us who live in a colder climate putting sweaters, jackets or booties on the dogs is perfectly reasonable when it is cold out there. Some dogs do need the extra warmth if they do not have an undercoat or much fur/hair. It is a good idea however to get the dog acclimatized and not to pamper them too much. Dressing dogs in 'fashionable gear' just because is where Brad will draw the line. In Rudy's case, he does have a bit of an undercoat that has grown in, but if we are out snowshoeing or it is below -15, I will pull out the jacket and booties for sure!

I Rudy! I saw your Daddy

I Rudy! I saw your Daddy Brad in Southcenter and wanted to give him a BIG HUG and say I LOVE YOU...YOU ARE THE BEST!!!! But, I restrained myself and just stared for awhile... :0) Happy New Year and hope you enjoyed Calgary!

my name is paige. i am a huge dog lover and have a 4 year old female dog named sheba. sheba is a golden retreiver and gets too excited when she see's another dog or when someone comes over. is this normal or can it be fixed?

It is a normal behavior and

It is a normal behavior and Sheba sounds like a very friendly dog. As long as she is not jumping up or harming your visitors, there is no need to worry. Rudy too gets very excited and squeals like a little pig. He knows not to jump up on people, so he is just saying his friendly hello.. and he is 5.

It is nice to find out that I
