![]() With summer creeping upon us, and hot days ahead, be sure to exercise your dog appropriately…. Walks and Runs Try to do your walks, or exercise early in the morning before it gets too hot. Your dog will continue to go as long as you, but you may be putting your dog in danger of overheating which can lead to serious problems, even death. Hiking If you are going on a hike, try to choose your path near a natural water source and one with shady areas. Watch your dog for signals of overheating. Take the time to allow your dog to drink and lay in the water or shade. Make sure your dog never leaves your sight. You never know what other animals may be sharing the trail with you. Also, have your leash and collar easily accessible should you need to leash up your dog quickly. When you have finished your hike, check your dog thoroughly for burs and other foliage that may be caught in their coat. Some seeds can find their way into your dog, which can lead to problems. Vehicle If you are running errands and your dog is with you in the car, reconsider leaving it at home. With the heat, a rolled down window is often not enough ventilation for your pooch. Vehicles heat up quickly and the well-shaded parking spots are hard to come by! |
